Troubleshooting: Configuring your firewall for use with Squeezebox
  Detailed Description

This article explains how to configure the firewall on your computer to allow a Squeezebox or Transporter to connect successfully to SqueezeCenter.

  Answer

This article applies to the following products:
Squeezebox
Transporter

This article applies to the following platforms:
Windows Vista / XP
Macintosh OS X 10.4 - 10.5.x

Firewalls on your computer often cause connection problems for Squeezebox and other network devices. While it is not necessary to disable your firewall in order to allow Squeezebox to communicate with your computer, temporarily disabling it can be a quick way of diagnosing the problem.

If turning off your computer’s firewall allows Squeezebox to connect to SqueezeCenter, you should turn it back on and configure it to allow communication on the following ports:

  • Port 3483 (UDP)
  • Port 3483 (TCP)
  • Port 9000 (TCP)

Please see below for assistance with configuring the firewalls built in to Windows and Macintosh OS X.

Macintosh OS X 10.4 (Tiger):

  1. Open System Preferences -> Sharing, and click 'Firewall'
  2. Click 'New...' to create a new rule
  3. For 'Port Name:' specify 'Other'
  4. For 'TCP Port Number(s):' specify '3483, 9000'
  5. For 'UDP Port Number(s):' specify '3483'
  6. For 'Description:', specify 'SqueezeCenter'
  7. Click OK, and ensure that your new exception is checked on.

Macintosh OS X 10.5 (Leopard):

  1. Open System Preferences > Security and click “Firewall”
  2. Click “Set Access for specific services and applications”
  3. Click “Show All” at the top to view all your preferences, and then click SqueezeCenter.
  4. If your server is currently running, click “Stop Server”.
  5. Next, click “Start Server”.
  6. You will get a series of confirmations from your firewall asking if you want to allow access.  Click “Allow” for each.  (the dialogs will refer to “perl” and “mDNSResponderPosix”.)

Windows:
NOTE: Make sure the box for “Don’t allow exceptions” is unchecked in the firewall control panel, otherwise the connection between player and server is not possible.

  1. Go to Control Panels
  2. Click Security Center
  3. For Windows XP, click Windows Firewall under “Manage security settings for”.
  4. For Windows Vista, click Windows Firewall on the left, then click “Change Settings”.  (if a dialog appears asking to confirm, click “continue”.)
  5. Click the Exceptions tab
  6. Click “Add Port” and add an exception for these three ports:
    • Name: SqueezeCenter Discovery – Port number: 3483 – Protocol: UDP
    • Name: SqueezeCenter Control – Port number: 3483 – Protocol: TCP
    • Name: SqueezeCenter Web – Port Number: 9000 – Protocol: TCP
  7. Click “Add Program” then click “Browse” and add SqueezeCenter.exe.  The default location is C:\Program Files\SqueezeCenter\server.

Third-party Firewalls: Examples of third party software firewalls include: Brickhouse, Norton Personal Firewall, Norton Security Center, PC-Cillin, BlackIce, McAfee Security Center, ZoneAlarm. You will need to configure your firewall software or hardware to allow connections to ports discussed above. Refer to the instructions that came with your firewall for details.
